About Us

University Grants Commission

The University Grants Commission (UGC), Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, is the national authority responsible for determining the recognition and equivalence of academic degrees obtained from foreign universities. Our mandate ensures that qualifications earned abroad are fairly and consistently evaluated against Nepal's academic standards.

This portal, UGC Equivalence, digitizes the entire application process — from account registration to document submission, fee payment, and certificate issuance — so applicants no longer need to visit our office in person for most requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about the equivalence application process.

Equivalence is the official recognition granted by the University Grants Commission confirming that a degree obtained from a foreign university corresponds to an equivalent academic qualification in Nepal. It is generally required for further studies, government service, professional registration, and job applications within Nepal.
UGC provides two categories of equivalence: Regular Equivalence, for universities and qualifications already evaluated and approved in the past, and Procedural Equivalence, for universities or programs being assessed for the first time, which is reviewed by the concerned subject committee before a final decision is made.
Visit ugcequivalence.edu.np, create an account using the Sign Up option, verify your email, and log in. Once logged in, go to the Application menu to fill out the equivalence form and upload the required documents.
Applicants must submit the degree certificate and transcript, the certificate and transcript of the immediate lower academic level, a passport/visa or residence permit (for study outside Nepal and India), internship or clinical practice records where applicable, and any other documents relevant to the nature of the degree and subject.
For regular equivalence, certificates are usually issued within a few working days once all documents are verified as complete. Procedural equivalence, which requires subject committee review, may take approximately one month.
After completing your profile and uploading all required documents, submit your application and proceed to the payment tab to pay the applicable fee through the available online payment options. Please note that fees, once paid, are non-refundable except as permitted by the Commission's decision or prevailing law.
For Bachelor-level equivalence, the +2 (higher secondary) certificate is required as the entry qualification. For Master's-level equivalence, the Bachelor's degree is required, and for M.Phil. or Ph.D. equivalence, the Master's degree serves as the entry qualification.
Generally, SLC/SEE certificates are not required for Bachelor's, Master's, M.Phil., or Ph.D. equivalence applications, unless your immediate lower-level qualification pre-dates the higher secondary (+2) education system, in which case it may be required as entry qualification proof.
In addition to standard documents, M.Phil. and Ph.D. applicants must submit enrollment/registration proof, research progress reports, thesis defense and approval evidence, supervisor appointment letters, and viva voce related documents, where applicable.
If you encounter any issues while filling out the online application, please email our support team at equivalence@ugcnepal.edu.np, or contact the Spokesperson number listed in the footer of this website for further assistance.
